Creating the Galle Literary Festival 2024 Map: A Visual Journey

It was an absolute honor to be entrusted with the task of creating the official map for the Galle Literary Festival 2024 — an event that embodies the celebration of literature, culture, and community. From the outset, my goal was clear: to capture the vibrancy and unique spirit of this iconic festival while crafting a map that was both useful and beautiful.

More than just a navigational tool, the map was envisioned as a piece of art—a keepsake that attendees could take home and remember their literary journey through the historic streets of Galle Fort. As people unfolded the map, I hoped they’d feel the same excitement and awe I felt while illustrating it.

One of my early decisions was to build upon the festival’s existing branding. The bold color palette and distinctive typography, already familiar to festival-goers, served as the foundation for the visual identity of the map. It was essential that this piece aligned with the festival’s visual language while offering something new and engaging.

But I didn’t stop there. Inspired by the architectural charm of Galle Fort and the decorative motifs often seen in GLF venues and materials, I wove in delicate illustrations that echo the textures and aesthetics of the space itself. From tiny directional icons to playful detailing around venues, the map became more than a set of directions—it became a tribute to the city’s layered character.

Creating the map was a labor of love—completed within a five-day timeline that felt both thrilling and challenging. Fueled by tea, passion, and the occasional 1 a.m. labeling sprint, the process was intense but deeply fulfilling.

There was something incredibly special about seeing the map printed on a giant board at the festival. Watching people stop to find their way, point out landmarks, or simply admire the details brought everything full circle. It felt like the inner child in me—who once drew treasure maps on scraps of paper—had come full circle.

I hope that this map not only guided thousands through the festival, but also becomes a cherished memento of a week spent in the embrace of stories, creativity, and the warmth of Galle.
