Two weeks in Trincomalee felt like stepping into a living history book, with each sunrise painting a new story and every street revealing layers of heritage. As part of iDiscover Asia’s latest initiative, I had the privilege of illustrating a cultural map that captures the vibrant soul of Trinco—its sacred spaces, colonial echoes, bustling harbors, and the ever-present rhythm of the sea.
The Map: More Than Just Streets & Landmarks
Creating this map wasn’t just about plotting roads and marking locations—it was about storytelling. Every line, color, and tiny detail was infused with the essence of Trinco’s past and present. The challenge was to visually connect historical depth with contemporary life, crafting something that wasn’t just informative but evocative. Oh, and if you look closely, you might just spot a few hidden Easter eggs—stories tucked into the illustrations for those who know where to look.
Mentoring the Next Generation of Storytellers
Alongside a brilliant team of mentors, we worked with Trinco’s youth, guiding them through research, creative writing, and illustration. Students were divided into groups, each tasked with exploring different facets of their city. From conducting surveys to crafting narratives, their enthusiasm was infectious. It was incredible to watch their ideas take shape, their perspectives sharpen, and their confidence grow as they uncovered new dimensions of their own hometown.
A Special Visit & a Shared Experience
The workshop was made even more memorable by the presence of Her Excellency, Mrs. Bonnie Horbach, the Dutch Ambassador to Sri Lanka. Her visit underscored the importance of cultural preservation and global connections in shaping local talent. It was a powerful reminder that stories, no matter how rooted in a place, have the ability to resonate far beyond borders.
The Sights, The Sounds, The Unforgettable Moments
Beyond the workshop, Trincomalee offered an immersive experience. From the poignant silence of the British War Cemetery to the early-morning ballet of fishermen casting their nets, every moment was a lesson in contrast and harmony. Gun Point 3 was a definite highlight—three of us standing at literal (finger) gunpoint in a surreal, movie-like scene that still makes me laugh.
The Final Product: A Map, An App, & A Collective Effort
At the end of it all, the map was more than an illustration—it was a collective effort, a tangible reflection of the city’s heartbeat. The iDiscover Trincomalee app complements it beautifully, allowing users to not just see but hear and feel the stories embedded in its streets.
Looking Ahead
Leaving Trinco, I carried with me more than just sketches and notes—I left with a deeper appreciation for the city’s layered narratives and the incredible young creatives who will continue to tell its story. Here’s to more maps, more stories, and more unforgettable experiences.
